Lincoln County Pony Express Trail Ride

Since 1994 The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Posse has hosted a trail ride over a Pony Express route between White Oaks and Lincoln, New Mexico.  During the first weekend in August we offer an exciting ride through the mountains and range lands  of Lincoln  County.  The ride is an unique way for riders  to experience three days of riding and three nights camping out in the open beauty of New Mexico.  The evenings are spent around a campfire after a fine chuck wagon meal.  Each rider carries the mail for part of the ride.  The ride concludes in Lincoln with the optional participation in the annual Lincoln Days Parade down the main street.  You will be there in time to watch the re-enactment of Billy the Kid’s Last Escape.

ADIOS!!!!!

Please carefully read the following information about our ride:

We ride out each day, arriving at a new camp each night.  The Posse will move your vehicle to the new camp each day.  You arrive and camp out in White Oaks, NM on Thursday evening.  Friday we ride to a new camp and Saturday we ride to a third new camp.  Sunday we finish in the Parade in Lincoln.  The distance is about 100 miles but changes due to the trails we choose to use each year.  It is not always the same ride.  You ride and relax, we'll move your equipment from camp to camp. Meals, water, showers and port-a- potties are provided by us.  You bring a horse, feed for the horse, and camping gear for yourself.

You and your horse must be able to tolerate a 5-7 hour ride each day.  The trail covers various terrain and your horse should have new shoes.  We provide a sack lunch for you and water for the horses on the trail.

Because there are no pens on the trail, your horse will need to be tied out overnight.  Some folks bring portable pens, others use picket lines.  We strongly recommend you practice this at home.  Both you and your horse will have a better trip if you both are ready to camp.

No dogs are ever allowed even though yours is really cute and nicely behaved.  The same goes for stallions.  Horses that kick must be tagged with a red ribbon on their tail..  (We have some extra ribbons.)  No horses are allowed within smelling distance of the Chuck Wagon.  National Forest Service Regulations prohibit smoking.  Do not sass the Trail Boss.

A complete check of  equipment and last minute changes are included in the riders packets.  The trail ride fees for 2008 have not been determined as yet. The ride is limited to the first 45 riders.

We hope you will come join us as we carry on the traditions of the old west in historic Lincoln County, New Mexico.

We regret to inform you that this years Pony Express Ride (2008) will be an in house event, restricted to Sheriff's Posse members only.
